Introduction to Dark Mode

Dark mode has been the most amazing feature developed for popular apps. Turning on this feature on your phone inverts the color from white to shades of black. However, it improves the readability of text, can decrease strain in your eyes, and most important can save the battery life of your phone. Most of the app developers have introduced this feature that help people to get better usages of applications at night or in darker places like a dark room.

Why use dark mode?

There are mainly 2 reasons to this feature on your phone. Firstly, to decrease your eye strain. Secondly to decrease your phone battery consumption.

Decrease eye strain

Almost all new smartphone has an LED light that emits blue light that is harmful to our eyes. Blue light has a shorter wavelength and more energy as compared to other colors. Light is our basic needs but too much blue light can harm your eyes on a long term basis. Research can confirm that there is no scientific evidence that blue light damages our eyes but it surely does a little, as said by my parents(haha).

Sun is the main source of blue light and other minimal sources are smartphones or led screens of monitors or televisions. Smartphones emit less blue light as compared to the sun, but we spent most of our time using these devices, and that is enough to affect our eyes.

The human eye cannot accurately block blue light, as blue light is closest to invisible Ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light is considered to be dangerous and can lead to cancer.

It can decrease battery usage

In-fact it can significantly decrease battery usages on smartphones with OLED display. Old smartphones have LCD screens, and they will not have any impact on the battery of your smartphone. The newer OLED screens work differently. Each pixel in OLED generates its light while in LCD screen light pixels form the edges. When you turn to Dark mode the dark OLED pixels draw no power and compared to LCD which draws the same amount of power whether the screen is light or dark.
